After a successful IT consulting career, Gilberto “Gillo” Nobili joined Luna Rossa Challenge in 2000 after a grinder trials cold call.
“Italy has a lot of great sailors but typically they are Olympic sailors. Luna Rossa at that time was looking for a big guy to do the grinding, I went away for a couple of days of training, and I never left. It’s been 13 years that I’ve been doing this job.”
His background has been somewhat different from other crew members in that he has played a critical role in writing some of the onboard software to evaluate weather and performance data.
Nobili’s sailing career began as a crewman in the Star Class and he became champion of Italy’s Bracciano Lake district. In 2005, he won the Middle Sea Race with Atalanta II. He is also a passionate whitewater kayaker.
Joining ORACLE TEAM USA has been the perfect intersection of opportunity and technology for Nobili – combining his passion for the sport with the challenges of the training makes for a dream come true.
“As a sailing team, you start working at 7 am in the gym and you end around 7pm. People ask me where I find the time to do different stuff. The reality is when you like something, you just find the time and if you enjoy what you’re doing, it doesn’t really matter.”
