Ainslie Knighted

Ben Ainslie was awarded knighthood today in the 2012 New Year Honours List of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
“Sir Ben” received the honor after a year that included winning his fourth consecutive gold medal at the London 2012 Olympic Games, becoming the most successful Olympic sailor of all time. He was also selected as Britain’s flag bearer for the Closing Ceremony.
“This is an incredible honor,” Ainslie said. “When I set out Olympic sailing 20 years ago, I never would have dreamt this would happen. I couldn’t have achieved this honor without the support of all the people who have helped me throughout my career and so I hope they can also take some pride in this moment.”
Twice a year the Queen honors individuals who have made outstanding contributions to society – at New Year’s and on her birthday in June. Nominations are made by officials and the public with recipients selected by the government.
