Clearing Debris

From plastic bags to wrenches, fishing line to pieces of ORACLE TEAM USA’s broken wing sail, volunteers filed their bags during a beach cleanup at Point Reyes National Seashore on November 7. Members of ORACLE TEAM USA joined forces with marine conservation group Turtle Island Restoration Network, Conservation Corps of the North Bay and the America’s Cup Healthy Ocean Project to spend the day clearing out debris that has washed onshore at Limantour Beach.

While most pieces of the damaged AC72 racing yacht have been recovered and removed from the ocean and beaches, a few bits are still coming ashore. The cleanup added to the team’s on-going efforts to protect the marine environment.

More than 350 pounds of boat debris from a wrecked fishing boat comprised much of the day’s trash collected, including a diesel fuel filter and treated wood. About 50 people assisted with the cleanup, using rakes, shovels and digging in the sand with gloved hands to pick-up and remove the debris, plastic remnants and trash in advance of winter storms.

NEXT BEACH CLEANUP

The next beach clean will take place Saturday, Nov. 10, from 10:00 AM – 12:00 Noon at Islais Creek Park in San Francisco (Quint Street and Arthur Avenue) as part of the America’s Cup Healthy Ocean Project.
