Matt Cassidy has traveled to the four corners of the globe competing in some of sailing’s top racing circuits. An elite bowman, he has collected numerous world titles, and he has now brought his wealth of racing experience to ORACLE TEAM USA.
Cassidy grew up in Delray Beach, Fla., and he began sailing during summers spent in Harbor Springs, Mich. Four years racing at the College of Charleston were followed by a move to San Diego, Calif., where he started coaching. It was while in San Diego when he began racing professionally, competing in the Farr 40 class.
Cassidy has raced in more than 30 world and national championships, and he became a fixture on on international grand prix sailing circuit. He’s raced on a variety of boats from Farr 40s and TP52s to America’s Cup and Maxi Yachts, the World Match Racing Tour and M32s. In 2011, he was part of victories in the three primary grand prix championships – he won the TP52 Worlds and Audi MedCup and with Quantam Racing; won the World Match Racing tour title with GAC Team Pindar; and with Team Aqua won the RC44 class overall championship. He narrowly missed a repeat of the feat a year later. He also won the RC44 championship six of the eight years he raced, including four consecutive.
Prior to moving to Bermuda, Cassidy had spent seven years living in Chicago. He has a degree in business from the College of Charleston, and when not sailing, tries to take advantage of local surf spots during his travels.
