#TechTuesday: Wing with a twist

Wing trimmer Kyle Langford explains his job as the 'gas pedal' on the America's Cup boat.

"As a wing trimmer, I'm in charge of the boat speed. I work very closely with the helmsman to make sure that we're always sailing at our target boat speed at the optimum angle."

Langford explains how 'twist' in the wing changes with different modes of sailing and with wind strength.

Making all of these adjustments takes power from the hydraulic systems, so efficiency and economy in wing trim is valued.

"One of the critical parts of wing trim is the amount of energy that goes into controlling it - how quickly it gets done and the energy it takes to do that - is a big part of this America's Cup," adds design coordinator Scott Ferguson.
