Following the recent race period, we caught up with ORACLE TEAM USA coach Philippe Presti, the man charged with helping the defending champions find each metre that the team hopes is going to add up a winning advantage when racing starts this summer.
“I think it’s an awesome opportunity when you race,” he says. “You want to do a good job against the opposition and you want to show them. So everybody was at their best and I thought we made big jumps in every part of the game over the past two weeks.
“Every day we go on the water and try to do our best and as soon as we find a possibility to improve we jump on it…”
But Presti cautions that improvement at this level comes incrementally. The job is to never be satisfied.
“Our job is to identify where the next metre is to gain. We are still learning. It’s still the beginning of the game,” he says. "...It’s a new era of sailing and we are discovering every day how to sail these boats.”
